What Makes Therapy Successful? Look for This in a Therapeutic Relationship

If You Want your Therapy to be Successful, Look for This

I believe the therapeutic relationship is a sacred one. It’s a place where you should be able to:

  • have a private space for talking about your struggles

  • start to better understand yourself

  • connect with your needs and values

  • be vulnerable

  • express your fears

  • explore emotions that seem too difficult to manage

  • learn how to feel feelings safely

  • rebuild your relationship with yourself

  • process regrets, shame and guilt

  • validate and heal past trauma

  • start to see your worth

  • feel seen and heard

  • seek and accept guidance

  • lay all your cards out on the table

  • talk about stuff you haven’t told anyone else

  • foster self-reflection and be encouraged to challenge yourself, and

  • trust that the therapist sitting in front of you will hold your experience and healing gently with compassion, understanding and belief in you

This therapeutic relationship, which is also called the therapeutic alliance, describes the therapeutic bond between you and your therapist.

The Therapeutic Bond: One of the Most Important Factors for Making Therapy Successful

How we bond, and the quality of that bond, are key elements to any human relationship. Safe and secure relationships can allow us to flourish while unsafe and unpredictable relationships can negatively affect our mental health, physical health and overall wellbeing. This applies to family relationships, friendships, workplace relationships and romantic relationships.

So how does this relate to therapy?

The quality of the therapeutic bond will directly affect your ability to reach your therapy goals.

You may be wondering, what makes therapy a success? Research shows that the therapeutic bond is actually more important for your success than the interventions or modalities used by the therapist.

Oftentimes, clients can feel pressure to choose a therapist based on specific approaches used such as CBT, EMDR, Narrative and the list goes on. However, you will have greater success in reaching your therapy goals if you choose a therapist where you feel safe, comfortable and supported.

The building blocks that create a strong therapeutic bond include trust, safety, honesty, reliability, transparency, respect, empathy, genuineness, repairing therapeutic ruptures, collaboration and shared responsibility of your progress toward your therapy goals.  Imagine having a safe, secure and attentive bond that naturally fosters your growth and healing.

How Therapeutic Bonds are Created at Inner Wisdom Psychotherapy

Creation of a strong therapeutic bond guides the work at Inner Wisdom Psychotherapy. It creates the foundation for how we will work together to help you achieve your therapy goals.

Here is how the therapeutic bond is built into every aspect of your therapy:

  • In the Initial Consultation Session: I provide you with a supportive and welcoming space to discuss your therapy needs and goals. Through compassionate guidance, your fears and any uncertainties you have about therapy are addressed. Together, we will decide if I am the right fit of therapist for you. You will be encouraged to ask me questions, explore how I offer support and assess if we are aligned in our vision for how we can make your goals possible.

  • During your First Therapy Session: We build connection, understanding and trust. I do this by taking time to understand you. I will ask you to tell me about your life, the experiences that have led up to the challenges you face today and the strengths and supports you currently have. Through your words, I will see you, hear you and understand where you are coming from. This creates the foundation for safe and comfortable healing.

  • Deciding your Treatment Approach: Your priorities and needs will drive how we design your path to healing. You get to co-create your therapy goal plan with me and together we decide how to make your goals achievable. Goal plans are clear, your needs are respected and we decide how we will each be responsible for your healing journey. You will feel empowered seeing a clear and achievable path forward.

  • Therapy Sessions Ongoing: I approach every session believing you and I are both experts. You are the expert of your goals, needs and understanding of yourself.  I am the expert of using therapeutic approaches and applying them in a way that moves you closer to your goals. We blend our expertise together to guide your sessions and keep you moving forward on the path of healing.

  • Ongoing Check-ins to Promote Success:  I encourage open communication to assess how therapy is going and how to improve it. Together through supportive and honest communication, we determine if your therapy goals have been met or if an adjusted treatment approach is needed.

  • Aftercare: When your therapeutic goals are achieved, together we decide next steps. The therapeutic alliance does not end when your goals are met. Many clients want to be connected with other supports to continue their wellness journey. I can connect you to additional support to help you keep your success going.  You will not be left on your own to figure this out.
